Dave Schlesinger, a resident of Anchorage, is the founder of Hero For Life. Dave is an honorably discharged U.S. Marine and holds an M.B.A.
Dave's father was diagnosed at the age of 38 with serious coronary heart disease. The doctor's were amazed that he was even still alive; he had 98% blockage in all three main arteries. He lived another 26 years of vigorous life before dying of a sudden heart attack in 2000.
This led Dave to become aware of and concerned with the overwhelming number of people who are not familiar with the basic life saving skills of CPR and First Aid. From parents, grandparents, babysitters, to restaurant, hotel, and construction workers, there was clearly a need.
Dave formulated his mission:
"To empower people to confidently administer CPR in any life-threatening emergency....without hesitation!"
Minnie M. Schlesinger, an Anchorage resident, is a co-founder and the primary instructor for Hero For Life. She holds a Masters Degree (M.S.) in Biology with an emphasis in Biochemistry.
Prior to moving to Anchorage, she was a full time faculty member at the University of Texas at San Antonio for 14 years. She taught Genetics, and General Physiology and Anatomy to students who were primarily health-care bound majors (pre-med, pre-dental). In addition, she was an adjunct faculty instructor at one of the Community Colleges in San Antonio where she taught Nutrition, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology.
Upon moving to Anchorage, she began Hero For Life, and has been teaching CPR, First Aid. She teaches to individuals where class sizes are small, between 1 to 4 students, and to groups where she will travel to their office location (minimum group size of 3).
Furthermore, she teaches part-time at the University of Alaska, Anchorage where she currently teaches Introductory Biology, and Microbiology.
Minnie is a seasoned instructor, and teaches in a non-intimidating, enthusiastic, effective manner. She believes in spending a majority of the course time to hands-on training, since she truly wants her students to feel confident in their ability provide CPR.
Interestingly, her paternal grandfather, Clifford G. Shull, won the 1994 Nobel Prize in Physics.
